Logo de l'AFAThe Association Française d’Acupuncture (French Acupuncture Association, or AFA) is the oldest Western association of acupunctural doctors. Created in 1945, it was fundamental in the founding of the Société internationale d’acupuncture (International Society of Acupuncture, or SIA, now extinct), the Syndicat national des médecins acupuncteurs français (National Union of French Acupuncturists, or SNMAF) and the teaching of Chinese massage in France through the Cercle de massothérapie chinoise (Circle of Chinese Massotherapy), created in 1949, which would eventually become the Association française de massage chinois (French Association of Chinese Massage), through the efforts of Gérard Archange. Internationally renowned, it sparked the creation of foreign acupuncture associations, especially in Germany with the creation of the DÄGfA in 1951. It enjoys an ongoing relation with Italian acupuncture associations. From its earliest days, it has taught traditional acupuncture; it publishes a quarterly journal, the “Revue française d’acupuncture” (French Journal of Acupuncture), along with a newsletter ,”Le Baihui”. This French Journal of Acupuncture follows on the heels of the “Revue internationale d’acupuncture” (International Journal of Acupuncture) and the Archives of acupuncture, the publication of which began in 1947. The AFA’s members have included internationally renowned acupuncturists like Albert Chamfrault and Nguyen Van Nghi.
It has constantly researched both the philosophical and clinical foundations of Chinese medicine. Its studies are based on the knowledge of the principles of Chinese medicine, its thinking, its history, and the whole context surrounding it. It also produces translations (notably, French translations of Jiayi Jing, Lingshu, and Suwen) and comprehension studies of the classical medical texts, and it compares its studies with clinical experiences through the observation of patient. These studies are the subject of medical consultations at patient’s bedside, regular seminars (especially on meridians and points), conventions and publications which include, in addition to the Revue française d’acupuncture (quarterly), books (Éditions La Tisserande), handouts, conference proceedings, papers, etc.
By bringing together acupuncturists from all over France, the association provided basic education up to the 90’s, when it participated in the establishment of the Inter-University Diploma (IUD), and its animators are involved in the teaching of Acupuncture module, a current State-issued medical diploma. It participates in continuing medical training within the FAFORMEC and in postgraduate education by organizing an annual convention and numerous seminars (5 to 6 per year) throughout France, in which the Chinese massage (tuina) therapists and physiotherapists participate on a regular basis. Each year, a seminar with midwives is devoted to obstetrics and pediatrics.
Within the CNAMA (Confédération nationale des associations médicales d’acupuncture, or National Confederation of Medical Acupuncture Associations), the AFA co-organized the 2nd World Congress of the WFAS in Paris in 1990. It is one of its founding associations.
