European Traditional Chinese Medicine Association (ETCMA www.etcma.org ) is one of the founding members of the World Acupuncture Day Organization (WADO) and is the biggest European umbrella organization for TCM in Europe. ETCMA is composed of 29 professional associations from 19 different European countries (plus an affiliate association from Israel) and this number is steadily growing.
ETCMA is also one of the two associations of Chinese Medicine included in EUROCAM (http://www.cam-europe.eu/), the most important political body advocating for Complementary and Alternative Medicines in EU policies.
We have signed Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with several extra-European TCM professional bodies, we are NCCAOM providers (U.S.A. National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) and members of the WHO affiliate World Federation of Acupuncture Societies (WFAS http://www.wfas.org.cn ); our president Gerd Ohmstede is vice-president of WFAS and our head of advocacy sits in FAS Executive Committee.
ETCMA was founded in 2002 from the collaboration of four founding members AGTCM (Germany), BAcC (United Kingdom), EUFOM (Belgium) and NVA (Netherlands) which were represented by Nils von Below, Jasmine Uddin, Johan Roose and Albert de Vos. The first two presidents have been Jasmine Uddin and Albert de Vos.
Each year we organize several events at the most important and biggest TCM event in Europe: the TCM Kongress Rothenburg. ETCMA’s events - aimed at fostering expert’s exchanges in information, research, education and health policies - include: WHO forum, School Leaders Day, Scientific and Cultural Exchange Meeting with Asian delegations, TCM Goes Political, ETCMA Herbal Strategy Meeting, TCM Congress Chairmen Meeting, Tricontinental meeting…
Apart from the President (Gerd Ohmstede, since 2017), the Executive Committee is presently formed by Johanna Biemans (vice-president), Georgette Young (honorary secretary), Giulia Boschi (advocacy), Klaas Kromhout (treasurer), Jasmine Uddin (education), John Jaarsveld (research), Ricardo Teixeira (communications) plus an external representative for the EUROCAM work: Sofie Mollekens. (https://www.etcma.org/executive-committee/ ). Every year a General Assembly with all the Associate’s representatives (one or two for each association) is held, each time in a different EU country.

We work every day to positively influence the regulatory environment, to create cooperation opportunities in the TCM community, to foster and exchange best practices and to enhance Chinese medicine in every respect: education, research, professional development, health care and health policies.

ETCMA continues to welcome new professional associations as members. We exchange views and experiences over matters of mutual interest, such as the statutory regulation of our therapies and the development of our educational programmes. We are also a reference point for any healthcare policy and regulation in Europe that may impact on our professionals and our patients, and we offer particular expertise in all fields of TCM to cultural and political Institutions.
